ASPITOP

Pain in cattle

Just like humans, cattle experience pain and stress. The big difference is, pain in cattle can be difficult to observe. And they can’t really tell us, right? Farmers and veterinarians have to look at behavioral changes, facial expressions or other indicators to know if their animal is stressed or in pain. However, we know that cattle experience pain and stress during calving, lameness, mastitis, injuries,… Evaluating pain is important for the animal’s welfare and the farm’s production. Aspitop is there to relieve cattle’s pain quick and easy, and in this way we want to change farming into Stressless Farming.

How to recognize a cow in pain

ATTENTION TOWARDS THE SURROUNDINGS – if a cow is in pain, she tends to be less focused on the environment.

HEAD POSITION – pain will often result in lower head carriage.

EAR POSITION – cows in pain keep their ears straight backwards or very low like lamb’s ears.

FACIAL EXPRESSION – the cow has a changed facial expression when in pain, a so-called pain face.

RESPONSE TO APPROACH – a cow in pain is less interested in social interaction and will therefore try to avoid an approaching person.

BACK POSITION – pain in legs or abdomen may result in an arched back.

LAMENESS – lameness is a result of pain in one or several limbs. Pain in more than one limb may result in a very careful walk, rather stand a limp.
